Description

I could start the description of every item I post in the store with “This item is one-of-a-kind.” And it’s true. Every hand-made thing takes time, patience, effort, and skill. But some things are particularly special for an artisan/artist who makes them. This rug is one of them.

From a few skeins of white yarn to a beautiful accent rug — that is a long journey. To become a rug the yarn had to go through many steps and transformations. A very short version: I dyed the yarn; plied it to make it thicker; knitted the rug; gave the rug a bit of felting.

I don’t think I really planned for the colors to match anything specific, but when I took the rug outside to take pictures of the work in progress, a magical thing happened: the leaves were falling; I put the rug on the porch, and started picking up some leaves, and — see the pictures of how the colors of the rug almost exactly matched autumn leaves.

Most “home made” rugs are probably woven or maybe crocheted, but this one is knitted. This technique of making rugs is less common, but there are still lots of knitted rugs out there. If I used the same yarn to weave a rug, it would probably end up somewhat thicker and definitely stiffer. Knitting gave this rug different qualities. You can see from the pictures how flexible it is.

After I knitted the rug, I gave it a bit of felting. Not too much, just a little — to make it tighter and a bit thicker.

To make the rug I used very course and durable yarn; it is meant for being used for a rug. Don’t be afraid to walk, or stand, or sit on the rug — it is meant to be used. However, if it were me, I would probably use the it more like an accent rug than a rug for high-traffic areas — just because I would then have to clean it less often. The rug, for example, would look really beautiful as a decorative piece in a living room or a warm thing to sit on by a fireplace. You could even use it as a unique cover for a wooden chest or a decorative table. (I definitely would not put any dishes with food or drink on it).

Do not use the rug anywhere it would get regularly wet: bathrooms or outdoors are not good places for this rug.

Do not hang this rug on the wall — it will sag and stretch.

The rug does not have any backing or non-slippery lining. Please make sure that you use your rugs on some kind of non-slippery surface or with proper lining that would prevent them from sliding and slipping.

Size: appr 43.5″ x 26.5″

Care: Spot clean; vacuum with an attachment; professional cleaning. If you feel comfortable with hand washing wool, and if you have enough patience, it is actually possible to wash this rug. I can send you separate instructions about washing the rug.

The rug will be shipped rolled up and not folded, so that there are no any fold marks/lines on it.

Thank you so much for stopping by and looking at my work.
